Mr. Dean did a speech about creativity. He explained the meaning of creativity and how to increase it. So, what does it mean to be creative? Mr. Dean told us that creativity is not reproduction and therefore, copying someone else's idea is not being creative. Creativity is production, making something new and original. Also, it is fun to be creative but not easy. Mr. Dean stated that although, it seems like good ideas magically come to you, there is almost always a trigger. He explained this by giving an example of an experiment conducted by scientists. It showed that people's creativity comes from a trigger of some kind.
Mr. Dean also explained ways to increase creativity. He said that shifting eyes and getting more instructions on something increases creativity. He then added that prizes, money, and distractions decrease creativity. However, he explained, controlled distraction maybe beneficial because creativity decreases when too focused or too distracted. He gave and example of using random words when stuck with an essay.
I think Mr. Dean's speech was very interesting because we usually do not get a chance to learn about being creative in Korea. It's all about memorizing and studying here. However, I think that being creative is crucial in order to succeed in any job or department. So, I would like to practice being creative. I hope I can improve my creativity.
